Dawns Natur, 2017

Within this project, I have tried to capture the movements of trees and how the wind allows them ‘dance’ within their environment. I wanted to highlight the movements of the trees because I wanted to take a mundane object and allow it to speak for itself. Capturing the movement on paper and canvas, it was as if the tree was leaving their own signature mark. To try and record the trees movement, I explored several ways of documenting the moves; painting, photography, and video. I explored the use of a painting machine and I began attaching painting implements to the branches with string, which allowed them to move freely within the wind. I decided to use tea as my paint as it recorded the movement of the tree so well, this is due to the translucent effect it gives which allowed it to layer over itself without bleeding into each other.  I found that with the use of tea it helped with the natural theme of my work. The photography aspect of my work shows how I constructed the painting machine and attached it too the tree. I decided to incorporate the use of video within my project as I wanted to show the contrasting motion as the movements were so sporadic. The title is welsh for ‘Nature’s Dance’ as the location in which I recorded the trees movement reflects the name of the piece as the l used trees within Wales.
